Answer to the question “Shirley Chisholm, the first Black U.S. congresswoman, represented which state?“
In 1968, Shirley Chisholm ran for and won the House of Representatives seat in New York’s 12th congressional district, making her the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress. A Brooklyn native, Chisholm had been a teacher and educational consultant before she began her political career with a stint in the New York State Assembly, where she served from 1965 to 1968. Her work there paved the way for her congressional campaign, which portrayed her as “unbought and unbossed.” In 1972, Chisholm made history again when she sought the Democratic presidential nomination, thus becoming the first Black woman to seek the nomination from one of the two major parties. Her bid was unsuccessful, but she made her mark on national politics in other ways.
While in the House, she became a founding member of both the Congressional Black Caucus and the National Women’s Political Caucus. She also passed important legislation, including the 1974 minimum wage law. She retired from Congress in 1983, but went on to co-found the National Congress of Black Women.
